Sic Luceat Lux.

I find myself quite fond of an old Travolta movie, "The General's Daughter", based on Nelson DeMillle's novel. One of those rare cases when the movie is more interesting than the book, in my humble opinion. In any case, I always found its ending unfulfilling -- the case is solved, and the main characters are simply shown driving away, despite their tumultuous back-and-forth all through the film.

Apparently there was an alternate ending that didn't make the movie...I like it far better, and not for its romantic notions, but rather for a sense of closure of the inter-personal cut-ins Simon West stuck with throughout the film.

Whatever you might think of the film itself or the book, the sound track is quite awesome. "Sea Lion Woman (She Began To Lie)" and "Rock Island Line" are worth listening to -- something of the "old-timey material", to use a phrase from "Oh Brother, Where Art Though".

Закончил, наконец, Life -- автобиографию Keith Richards-а. Очень понравилось. Прямо как-будто узнал чувака лично, да и окунуться в великие 60-е/70-е было интересно. Понравилось ещё, что написано, в общем-то, без претензий на величие. Несмотря на то, что иногда приходилось пропускать пару страниц философствования, в общем и целом рекомендую.

PS. Пойду ещё раз послушаю Midnight Rambler, Madison Square Garden, 27-28 ноября 1969...

Читаешь вот этот список, и просто по количеству названий сразу видно, что это что-то давно известное, широко распространённое и очень мерзкое:

Chumble fever, Continued fever, Crimean fever, Cyprus fever, Fist of mercy, Goat fever, Milk sickness, Mountain fever, Neapolitan fever, Satan's fever, Сlow fever, Scottish Delight.

Как по мне, так Satan's Fever и Scottish Delight are the winners.

Apropos, недавно видел комментарий на ю-тюбе к клипу Jumping Jack Flash -- одной из моих любимых песен Stones: "Keith Richards cannot be killed by conventional weapons".

Читаю, с большим удовольствием, книжку Gotham: The History Of New York City to 1898. Написано хорошо, с юмором, куча разных интересных фактов. Теперь понятно, откуда названия местные взялись и вообще.

Любому Нью-Йоркеру эта книжка будет очень даже интересна. Я буду периодически приводить всякие фактики.

Прелесть Киндла в том, что можно делать пометки/закладки. Я по исторической линии нахожусь в районе 1640х годов, во времена Нового Амстердама под руководством Голландской Вест-Индийской Компании. Просто нельзя не привести такой забавный пассаж:

Not only were there foo few women in New Amsterdam, but too few women disposed to Calvinist order and decorum. In Europe, unmarried Dutch women struck foreigners, especially the French, as shockingly improper, given to public kissing, lewd talk, and a general lack of regard for chastity, though married housewives were as a rule accounted pillars of sobriety and virtue. On the colonial frontier, mores grew even more relaxed. Over and over again the magistrates came up against bawds and doxies like Nanne Beeche, who went to a pаrty at the house of the wheelwright Claes Cornelissen and "notwithstanding her husband's presence, fumbled at the front of the breeches of most all of those who were present", setting off a near riot. A further complication here was the proximity of native women who seemed entirely lacking in sexual restraint -- "utterly unchaste and shamefully promiscuous", in the words of Adriaen van der Donck. They "are exceedingly addicted to whoring", agreed Dominie Johannes Megapolensis, who arrived in 1642 to serve as the minister to Rensselaerswyck. "They will lie with a man for the value one, two or three schillings, and our Dutchmen run after them very much". The dominie's point was clear: not until this sexual carnival had been brought under control (by way of law as well as the immigration of respectable women from Europe) could New Amsterdam be considered a properly settled colony, much less a stable community.
