I can't fucking believe this! We checkened out. Again. In the face of "muslim outrage". We have kissed their ass hoping this would help us in Iraq...sigh...and this Administration is considered a hard Republican one...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Washington on Friday condemned caricatures in European newspapers of the Prophet Mohammad, siding with Muslims who are outraged that the publications put press freedom over respect for religion.

By inserting itself into a dispute that has become a lightning rod for anti-European sentiment across the Muslim world, the United States could help its own battered image among Muslims.

"These cartoons are indeed offensive to the belief of Muslims," State Department spokesman Kurtis Cooper said in answer to a question. "We all fully recognize and respect freedom of the press and expression but it must be coupled with press responsibility. Inciting religious or ethnic hatreds in this manner is not acceptable."

"We call for tolerance and respect for all communities for their religious beliefs and practices," he added.

Major U.S. publications have not republished the cartoons, which include depictions of Mohammad as a terrorist. That is in contrast to European media, which responded to the criticism against the original Danish newspaper that printed the caricatures by republishing the offensive images themselves.

If the current Administration was a soft Democrat one, we'd be probably bombing Denmark by now.

Yep, Republican party of these US of A can be called "right-wing" only in a seriously left-skewed world.

Maybe, but two wrongs dont make a right.

Just when the time came to stand up for a freedom we consider basic, we pussied out in the name of a near-term political goal. Can't see the fucking forest for the trees.

The irony is that the Muslims will not appreciate the gesture -- they will still hate us regardless, but we now look like fucking double-standarding fools, preaching "democracy" and "freedom" with one corner of our collective mouth and condemning it with the other.

I'm unhappy with this Administration, but at the very least I expected them to maintain a line, whatever that line is...Fuck, and they called Kerry a flip-flopper...

No, my friend, much worse. We look like cowards. Muslim culture actually respects people who are good liars (double-standards, etc.) but they absolutely despise any signs of weakness or cowardice.

I expected them to maintain a line

Oh, they do, it just isn't a very straight line :) Soon after 9/11 White House held an after-Ramadan celebration dinner where W invited all the prominent Muslim clerics in the land. Some ass-kissing commenced. Many of those clerics are (and were) known for the extremist rhetoric they spew from the pulpits of their mosques.
