IRS, continued
Called the IRS today as suggested by the penalty letter. Explained everything. IRS officer was very nice but didn't ask for proof of the Post Office losing my tax return. Said they will mail me the decision within 10 business days.
Now, here's the kicker.
The penalty is 146-odd dollars, which includes 5-something in interest on the penalty. The IRS officer said she can maybe rescind the penalty but not the interest. "It's still payable to us. If you want that taken off, you need to call the service center that processed your return."

Please tell me this isn't a government operation. Does it make any sense to hold me liable for interest on the penalty they are about (I hope) to drop?
There is no fucking way I am paying anything of that penalty, interest or not (that's right, for $5 I can stand on principle).
We'll see where it takes us. Let's fuck with the IRS for $5 + interest!!!
PS. As I said before, with logic like that the Feds should stay the fuck away from my medical care.
